While this doesn't adequately answer your question and it seems you've come to the solution yourself anyway , there is always the nifty Fido , which is integrated in to Rufus. It allows you to download specific ISO builds of Windows 8. I'm on my Mac at the moment so can't verify this Rufus is a Windows executable but for once I'm trusting my memory. Works well. I would do what Windows updates I could, and then I would use the media creation tool. The same tool you use to go from 7 to Just choose the option to upgrade this PC. Oh wow, that's slick. It bugs me though that there are duplicated entries for 20H2 v2. Petty, but hey, I'm IT and now I want to explore what bug caused this. That's just it, This PC only downloaded 3 or 4 updates, one of which was the 20H2 and since that failed the Windows Update thinks it's done.
I feel like the engineers didn't anticipate people starting from a factory restore and their rollup-style updates don't play well from that far back in the past. But you're right I've got the Update Assistant installing 21H1 as we speak. Here's to hoping it works. That works. I think the media creation tool is pretty much the same thing.
I had a Windows 7 media center edition machine and it wouldn't do the upgrade assistant because that's not part of the upgrade path I guess. The solution? Media creation tool and upgrade this PC now. I may have even made the ISO with the tool and mounted it. However, it is after all Windows and not the Apple ecosystem, which means there are almost always ways to make things happen.
Thanks to a simple bat file, you can now choose to install any of the older versions of Windows 10 and download it directly from Microsoft's servers.
